Upgrading Harmony
The Fetzer Institute is a nonprofit, private operating foundation that explores the relationship between the inner mind, spirit, action and service in the world. The organization is based in Kalamazoo and was founded in 1962 by former Detroit Tigers owner John E. Fetzer. The Fetzer Institute sought an upgrade to their facility to promote harmony within the space, and Windemuller was eager to partner and complete this unique multi-level remodel.
Overview
Windemuller’s scope for the project included selective demolition, IT work, new lighting installation, and the replacement of several panelboards. Rooms included in this major overhaul were the cafeteria, kitchen, bathroom, library, conference rooms, offices, display room and a convening room. This unique project had a distinct look and feel that can be seen throughout the entire facility. The convening room, for example, has incredible wood detailing from floor to ceiling that includes a suspended ceiling system with custom LED light fixtures. The bathroom features red and green LED occupancy sensors at the doors and cove lighting throughout the area, complementing the wood accents with LED backlit mirrors.
In addition to the facility’s distinctive aesthetic, the building is in a triangle shape, meaning that there were very few 90 degree angles throughout the space. Besides the obvious challenges, all of the cove lighting was built to be installed in standard corners which resulted in field modification to ensure they would fit in the custom angles. As the construction team faced several unique challenges, we relied on our planning, experience and craftsmanship to produce an extraordinary and beautiful finished product. The customer was thrilled to return to the upgraded facility and utilize their new space, ranging from offices to the convening room to foster meaningful connections.
