Soaring to New Heights

To improve and enhance passenger service, the Gerald R. Ford International Airport made plans to relocate the security checkpoint area, as well as right-size pre- and post-security concessions.

The Challenge

To complete the updates, the east side of the Main Terminal was expanded by 57,000 square feet. To speed the security process, the market- place level now has a consolidated, five-lane checkpoint – with room to add two more lanes as needed. This expansion also allows travelers the luxury of dining at a full-service restaurant while they wait for their flights.

The Solution

Windemuller’s Communications team lent their expertise to the project by installing 150,000 feet of Category 6 network cabling throughout the new addition. The cabling was instrumental in connecting multiple networks into the new expansion.

In addition, Windemuller implemented:

  • Data cabling
  • Network closets
  • Security network, including new cameras to survey checkpoints and the marketplace
  • Flight monitoring network, which provides travelers with flight schedule information
  • Video display system
  • Fiber optic cabling to ensure multiple data rooms throughout the airport communicated seamlessly with one another

With tight work spaces and secure areas, the unique work environment presented challenges throughout the installation process. Since the airport remained open during construction, Windemuller technicians were mindful of not disrupting travelers as they worked. But now, the Gerald R. Ford International Airport is ready for takeoff!
